Youth Physical Activity Initiatives and Resources

Take Time!

Healthy Communities of the Capital Area (HCCA) supports training and resource development for Take Time!, a physical activity program that integrates daily physical activity opportunities into the classroom separate from physical education classes. The Take Time! program was developed for K-5 students and is intended to accumulate 10-20 minutes of additional physical activity during the school day. Several schools across our Local Service Area (LSA) have been trained and have implemented Take Time!

I am Moving, I am Learning

I am Moving, I am Learning is a Head Start physical activity and nutrition initiative designed to prevent and reverse the negative consequences of obesity in Head Start children. The goals of I am Moving, I am Learning are to:

1) increase the quantity of time spent doing moderate to vigorous physical activities during the daily routine to meet guidelines for physical activity for preschool children.
2) improve the quality of structured movement activities intentionally facilitated by teachers and adults; and
3) improve healthy food choices for children every day.

Head Start sites at Southern Kennebec Child Development Corporation (SKCDC) have implemented I am Moving, I am Learning .

Indoor and Outdoor Walking Trails on School Campuses

HCCA has worked with schools across our LSA to map indoor and outdoor walking trails on school campuses. Several of these trails have been made available to community members for after school walking.

Places to be Active

HCCA has developed a Local Service Area-Wide (LSA) guide to Places to be Active This guide is a wonderful resource for families who wish to find places to be active in their community. If you know of more places to be active across our LSA that are not listed in the guide, please contact us .
