The Unsafe Drinking Work Group

Substance Abuse Prevention Projects in The Capital Area

Project #1: Workgroup on Underage Drinking and High Risk Drinking Among Young Adults

About the Work Group

The Effort: Healthy Communities of the Capital Area (HCCA), in cooperation with related organizations and concerned local citizens, has formed a time-limited Work Group to plan and begin activities to prevent underage drinking and high-risk drinking by young adults. Between January and June, 2008 this workgroup will meet approximately seven times to:

-Define and document the size and nature of the problem
-Identify strategies that have proven effective in preventing these problems in other communities, and
-Select the activities that are highest priority for immediate implementation

The workgroup will highlight and support efforts in local communities where they exist, and to help develop new local and regional efforts where they can help solve the problem.

A Wide Range of Perspectives Have Been Included: Underage and high risk drinking must be addressed in a comprehensive way. HCCA staff members have recruited people who bring the following perspectives to the table

  • -Youth
  • -Parents
  • -Law Enforcement
  • -Schools
  • -Alcohol Retailers
  • -Alcoholic Beverage Servers
  • -Employers
  • -Related Health, Wellness, Behavioral Health and Social Service Organizations
  • -Other Citizens Concerned About the Problem
