About The PRIME for Life Risk Reduction Class:  This 12-hour educational program is for people under 21 who have made unhealthy choices about substance use:  alcohol and/or other drugs.  This evidence-based program provides youthful offenders with accurate information about the risks of use, and helps them weigh—for themselves—the advantages and disadvantages of continuing to use.  Most important, it helps youth plan for and commit to changes in their behavior.  The program is offered to small groups: 2-6 people, and as needed, on a tutorial basis to individual participants.

Eligibility:  Representatives of the Kennebec County District Attorney’s office identify individuals who appear to be appropriate candidates for this program and refer them to the program’s registration staff (see contact information below).  Typically, the program is offered to first time offenders who are facing charges for underage drinking and/or related violations.

Location/Schedule:  The program is offered once a month, in Augusta or Waterville, based on registrations.  Classes are completed over a two day period:  Day One: 8:00 to 3:00 PM; Day Two:  8:00 to 1:00 PM.

Expectations:  The program is provided as an alternative or reduction to a court ordered fine.  To ensure waiver of a fine, individuals must:

Attend all 12 hours of the PRIME for Life class,
Complete the paperwork required by the program,
Behave appropriately while participating in the program, and
  Pay the registration fee.

Fee for this Program: $50 per person, payable upon registration, by check or cash (no cards at this time).  A waiver of the fee may be authorized the Kennebec County District Attorney’s Office for individuals/families with extremely limited income.  Checks should be made out to HCCA.

Program Management and Delivery:  The PRIME for Life program is managed by staff of the Southern Kennebec Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP) and Healthy Communities of the Capital Area.  Each class is taught by a nationally certified PRIME for Life instructor.
