Law enforcement agencies across southern Kennebec County work hard every day to enforce Maine's underage drinking laws. Two special projects are currently underway to support and enhance enforcement wtih existing resources:
A) The Augusta Police Department and the Hallowell Police Department are working under a grant from the Maine Office of Substance Abuse to establish new, model enforcement policies within their departments, train officers in the implementation of the policy, and conduct special enforcement details. Funding under this project began October 1, 2010, and will continue through September 30, 2013.
Training is available as part of this project to other law enforcement agencies in southern Kennebec County, and through an agreement between HCCA and the Gardiner Police Department.
For more information, contact: Lt. Jared Mills, Augusta Police Department.
B)
The Kennebec County Sheriff's Office is also working under a grant from
the Maine Office of Substance Abuse, to support expanded enforcement
activity in both southern and northern Kennebec County. Model underage
drinking policy is already in place within this department.

Prescription drug misuse is increasing across Kennebec County. Our law enforcement community is partnering actively with local community groups to get unused and unwanted medications out of the medicine cabinets and homes of local citizens, and disposed of in a manner that is safe to the environment.
A) Medications Pick Up/Drop Off Service--EVERY DAY
The following law enforcement agencies in southern Kennebec County now accept unused and unwanted prescription drugs from community members, and safely dispose of them:
Augusta: Augusta Police Dept., 33 Union St.
Kennebec Sheriff's Office, 125 State St.
Gardiner: Gardiner Police Dept., 6 Church St.
Winthrop: Winthrop Police Dept., 15 Town Hall Lane
To support this service, secure lock-boxes will be placed in the public lobbies of these departments, no later than April 30th.
B) Semi-Annual Medication Drop-Off Days
Local
law enforcement partners regularly with Kennebec Valley Council of
Governments, the Drug Enforcement Agency, and local community groups to
schedule, promote, and conduct medication drop-off events. These
popular events help call people's attention to the problem, and the
importance of safe disposal. The next event will take place in the spring of 2012.
